More MySpace Censorship (and how to get around it!)

Whilst Marisa was lurking my MySpace page just now, She found that clicking the link that takes you to my blog here, just takes you straight back to the MySpace homepage. How strange. I thought that perhaps I'd typed the address of my blog in wrong when editing my profile, but when I went back into edit mode, I found that the URL I'd typed in had changed completely to some address at msplinks.com . So I edited my profile back to the original address and saved it again. Only to find the link was changed instantly by MySpace to the same address, which took you back to the MySpace homepage.

So I did a little research. Apparently MySpace started using Msplinks.com to stop spammers leaving comments on your page. Fair enough, but that's no reason to stop me linking to my own blog, even if that blog does exist somewhere outside MySpace's realm of shit advertising. Basically it's just another form of MySpace censorship, and if people are stupid enough to add people who are clearly spammers to their friends list, then they deserve a load of comments spam in my opinion.

But how to get MySpace to link to my blog? Well, it looks like Msplinks.com blocks any links to blogger sites, so the simple answer is to set up a redirect from another site. In my case, I have space at Google Pages, so I set up a fake page there which just included nothing but this script in the body of the page to redirect to my blog:

<script>self.location="URL of your blog here";</script>

Then just link to this page from MySpace instead of your actual blog URL, and you'll be good to go. MySpace, who's the stupid idiots now?

Update: It seems that MySpace have found out about this workaround, and have since blocked it. If MySpace are so serious about censoring it's users, and blocking links to competitors websites (which seems a very childish thing to do), I no longer want to be associated with it. I think I may have found a site that has everything I was looking for in MySpace: Virb, have a look round and see what you think - personally I think it looks a much more friendly, well designed, and less money driven alternative, and I shall be moving there as soon as I've made my profile!

it's not only stopping blog links...its stopping bebo, last.fm, youtube URLs and even a link I had for people to view all my myspace comments.

its so annoying!!!

Thank you so much for posting your clever solution. I HATE myspace but am not ready to delete my account in protest of their horribly fascist policies. Thanks for helping me not feel so victimized.

Well, I'd leave MySpace in a snap, but the fact of the matter is that whilst it is slow, cludgy, always breaking and fascist, it's also the most populated and customisable of the social networking sites. This means, unfortunately, for us creative people, it's the best site for getting our 'thing' out there, no matter how bad it is. It's not the first time I've had to find a way around MySpace's stupid censorship, and I'm not a spammer, I'm a legitimate user. If less people were 'friend whores' - trying to collect as many as possible for no reason other than their own personal popularity contest, and actually looked to see if people requesting them as friends were actually spammers, I don't think MySpace would have anywhere near the problem it does right now.

I tried this, however it didn't seem to work for me. Prehaps i did something wrong?

Also, how would i get it to link to my pictures, blogs etc?

I think perhaps you are trying to install the script on your mySpace profile. Instead what you should be doing is setting up a seperate page somewhere that myspace will link to, the sole intention of which is to redirect you (using the script mentioned in the article) to the page MySpace would otherwise block.

This is now what happens when you try to click a link to a Blogger site:

MySpace -> (sees that it is a blocked address and sends you straight back to the MySpace homepage)

Here's what's happening with this workaround in place:

MySpace -> googlePages (not a blocked website, so allows you to go to the link) -> (redirect script takes you to...) Blogger

I hope this better explains it for you. Whatever URL you put in the redirect script is the one that MySpace will ultimately send you to when you link to the "dummy" redirect page. If you're still confused maybe I'll write a step-by-step guide as I'm sure there are a lot of people wanting to know about this.

Thanks for the suggestion, it's has been very helpful. I had a link to my blog from myspace before they started using msplinks.com, but all the other links that I created after msplinks.com were redirected to the myspace homepage. So I simply created a page on my blog with the redirect code and the job was done.

I just want to say THANK YOU for posting this... I'm a recent victim of link bastardization and you've saved my page :) Thanks again!

currently i dont think the google redirect works.. wont even just go to my google page

I think they must have added google too because the work around is blocked too. Any thoughts now?

I tried this, I went thru the entire process of making the re-direct dummy page and then linking to that site, but it still re-directed me back to myspace.

Perhaps googlepages has now been added to the "no fly" zone of myspace.

Thing is, my allpoetry, storywrite, and livejournal links still work, i just can't link to any other site besides those three.

Thats not working for me.

Ok, the redirect doesn't work, but what I have found does work is this: Get a web page on a "trusted" site and then create a page on it with a frame, make the only frame that you will use have the source of the page that you are trying to redirect to. It kind of sucks to have to do this but it works.

All the resource sites that are filtered should start promoting http://www.zooped.com

Truth: I Never Accepted Tom as a "Friend" from the Start--HAHAHA

I spent many hours over the course of a year designing two random quote generators on my private AOL (paid account). They are two simple pages each with only one link back to MySpace! But the new msplinks have rendered the paths inaccessible from my MySpace page. What is it that's so threatening? My AOL acct. or the quote generator from Lycos HTML Gear? I've emailed their Help Desk 3 times and received the same generic non-answer to my problem. (Their troubled Goth msg. boards are no help either) If they are suggesting that I'm a phisher that's laughable! I don't even have "friends" or contact people via MySpace--It's just a design hobby in my lonely life. But I get the last laugh... MySpace and its paranoid geeks are more pathetic!

Thanks. This was a good workaround, but as you pointed out myspace has blocked it. It seems a few bad apples have ruined things for the rest of us. Oh well.

I just experienced this myself. Thank you for your blog!!!

what I can't figure out is how whateverlife.com and other sites like that can still direct you to their pages! If you look through their codes when you paste them on your page... I think they have their own msp link?

Yep, I'm sure you get the last laugh. As they walk away with millions and millions of dollars.

1. There are few solutions to the msplinks
2. Don't waste time using ANY links in Bulletins

3. back up all
code to text files, before you post to myspace.

4.Make a Myspace Group!!!! And DO not add " " around your http://www.links.com SAVE YOUR CODE BEFORE YOU POST IT
The groups profiles are FREE of MSPLINKS and have been for awhile...check out my group

http://groups.myspace.com/addmyspacefriends

5. I have had ok luck with widgets (they all are still NEW)
myspace can block your widget from bulletins...but not your profile, not every widget maker can get past the msplinks, so test it out...

6. use leader links in your profile to connect your group
here leave the " " on your links note class="leaderLink"

sample:

a href="http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=225928354" class="leaderLink" id="leaderLink"
img src="http://a524.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/47/l_e5e2fc0ebb4fa3e72070a84ac4317e8b.jpg" border="0"> /a
font color="FFFFFF" class="leaderLink">ADD+FRINEDS Group Leader: /font
a href="http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=225928354" class="leaderLink" id="leaderLink">Mac

this code is not changed to msplinks when posted in the profile

and if your myspace group can have NORMAL code

and all bulletins links are gone...

the solution is:

make a group, add the join code to your profile

post bulletins using only the TEXT URL of your group

I have over 50k freinds and 17k in my group since 8-05-07

today is Dec 4th 07

I will continue the FIGHT
